What Are The Different Types of Harnesses In Child Car Seats?

When looking at car seats, you may come across six-point, five-point, t-shield harnesses. The six-point will have two straps at the crotch, hips and shoulders while the five-point only has one at the crotch. A t-shield comes is a padded triangle that latches down at the crotch. There is also an over-the-head fitting that latches at the crotch.

Nowadays, you will normally find mostly five-point harnesses which are deemed to give the most protection to your child. This is because this arrangement secures the child more tightly and in the event of a collision, this would prevent excessive movement that would harm the child. The t-shield and the over-head fittings do not secure the child as securely and could allow the child to be thrown from the seat in a collision.

A tether is normally a strap that is made of the same material as the seat but also has a clip that secures a forward facing baby seat again to prevent excessive movement of the child in the event of a collision.

How can I find out how to safely install my baby’s car seat?

If you buy a new car seat it will always come with printed instructions for fitting. If you have problems, contact the manufacturers and, if you purchased the seat from a High Street store, you will often find they have trained members of staff to show you how to fit it. If you have a Britax Duo Plus Isofix, you can download the instructions from this web site or more simply, watch this video!

In general, the fitting in a car depends on the type of seat. If you have a rear facing seat (which you should keep for as long as possible) it should be located in the centre of the rear seat while the next stage seats or boosters will be placed either side behind the driver and passenger seats.

If you wish to take a car seat on a plane, please note this is often required if a child is under 2. You will be restricted by the width of the seat which usually must be less than 16 inches. Call the airline to find out if your seat will fit the plane and once onboard, the cabin crew will help you fit your seat and settle your child comfortably.
